WHAT BAD LOOKS LIKE

When reality exceeds belief…

belief doesn’t expand immediately—reality breaks people first.

Even if something is:

Knowing is not the same thing as believing.
Believing is not the same thing as changing.

Behavior only changes when reality becomes unavoidable.

This is the harsh part:

This is the pattern.

It shows up in individuals, in businesses, and in entire societies.

The smoking example is simple—but precise:

Smoking → immediate relief
Death → abstract, distant

The outcome is known.
The risk is real.
The solution is available.

And still—most people don’t change.

Not because they don’t understand, but because it isn’t real to them yet.

“Inescapable” is the threshold where reality can no longer be ignored, reframed, or deferred. It is where consequences become immediate, visible, and personal—where the cost of inaction finally exceeds the cost of change in the present moment.

This is where behavior finally shifts.

The problem is:

by the time something becomes inescapable,

it is often too late to meaningfully alter the outcome.

This paper is about that threshold: what “inescapable” will look like at a civilizational scale—and how close we are to it.

So what happens when the state of the world exceeds what most people believe is possible?

When I started writing this, Ray Dalio’s study of rising and collapsing powers across five centuries placed the United States at roughly 4.5 on his six-stage cycle of internal decline.

That was already bad… It has since gone to worse—and is now bordering on horrific.

He now places us fully in Stage 5—on the brink of Stage 6: breakdown.

During Stage 5, the coming reality still appears too extreme for most people to believe.

The legal system still exists.
The stores remain open.
Political enemies still appear on television rather than disappearing into prisons.
Moderates still assume the center will hold.

People still believe tomorrow will remain broadly recognizable.

Then the conflict-resolution system stops working.

Stage 6 begins.

People flee.
Moderates disappear.
Political opponents are imprisoned or killed.
Violence determines questions institutions can no longer resolve.

What becomes ordinary inside Stage 6 would have appeared hysterical, paranoid, or unimaginable to many of the same people during Stage 5.

The unimaginable remains unbelievable until it becomes unavoidable.

Truth doesn’t change them.

Proof doesn’t change them.

Until finally—

destruction accomplishes what truth could not.

This is one of the oldest patterns in civilization.

As power concentrates, the people and institutions at the top become increasingly insulated from the consequences of their own decisions.

Warnings become inconvenient.
Criticism becomes disloyalty.
Bad news gets softened on the way up.

The people benefiting from the existing order become the people with the strongest reasons to defend it.

And eventually, a civilization can become powerful enough, comfortable enough, and certain enough of itself that it stops listening to the signals telling it something is terribly wrong.

The warnings were there.
The evidence was there.
The exits were still there.

But changing course remained more painful than continuing.
Until it wasn’t.

Then comes the part history remembers:

Collapse.
War.
Famine.
Defeat.
Revolution.
The exhaustion of the old order.

Only after the system breaks do the assumptions, institutions, and power structures that resisted correction finally lose their grip.

The tragedy is that correction often becomes possible only after the cost of refusing it has already been paid.

And as our power grew, the price of being wrong grew with it.

Armies burned cities. Empires broke nations. Industrial war consumed continents.

By 1962, one more failure no longer threatened a city, an empire, or even a continent.

It threatened civilization itself.

THE PRECIPICE WE STAND ON

Some people still think an extinction-level event is impossible — that the world, for all its chaos, will always somehow pull through.

That isn’t hope. It’s denial.

The truth is, we’ve already stood a breath away from annihilation.

On October 27, 1962, nuclear bombers were fueled on runways. Warheads were already in Cuba, aimed at U.S. cities. Generals in Washington and Moscow argued for preemptive strikes.

That day, the world teetered on the edge of its last chapter. Most people don’t know the name Vasily Arkhipov. Without him, you and I might not be here. Civilization wasn’t saved by strategy or reason — but by sheer dumb luck — and a single man’s conscience.

BLACK SATURDAY

Deep below the black water off Cuba, one Soviet submarine was being hunted.

Depth charges pounded the hull like a giant’s fists. Inside, the submarine had become a furnace. Men stripped to their waists, drenched in sweat and fainting from heat and exhaustion. They had been cut off from Moscow for days. To them, the world might already have been at war.

On board sat a nuclear torpedo—power enough to turn an aircraft carrier and its fleet into vapor, and with it, the last fragile chance at peace.

Outside, American warships had surrounded the battered sub and were closing the circle. Inside, their electrical power was almost gone. They could not remain beneath the surface much longer.

The submarine’s captain, Valentin Savitsky, ordered an emergency dive. His enraged words echoed through the submarine as the nuclear torpedo was readied for battle:

“We’re going to blast them now! We will die, but we will sink them all—we will not disgrace our Navy!”

From there, a catastrophic chain of retaliation would have consumed the world first in fire, then in darkness. Cities across continents would have burned. Hundreds of millions—and likely billions—would have died through firestorms, fallout, famine, and nuclear winter.

Modern civilization could have been shattered beyond recognition—its cities burned, its institutions broken, its trade and technology collapsing with them.

Whatever emerged from the ruins would have been poorer, harsher, and profoundly diminished.

The world we live in today—the internet, modern medicine, global travel, satellites, everything that came after—might never have existed.

And at the outer edge, humanity itself might not have survived.

But Vasily Arkhipov—the brigade’s chief of staff—said no.

The fate of civilization came down not to presidents or parliaments, but to one weary man’s refusal to press a fucking button.

We are not here because the system worked. We are here in spite of it.

DUMB LUCK IS NOT A CIVILIZATIONAL STRATEGY

Here’s the part that matters:

Most people can hear that story, believe it’s true, even shudder at how close we came—and then go back to their normal lives unchanged.

That is the problem.

It can be real enough to destroy everything you have ever known—and still not feel real enough to change what you do tomorrow.

Two superpowers, in what now looks like humanity’s technological infancy, came within one decision of a catastrophe that could have ended modern civilization.

But because disaster was narrowly averted, it became easy to file the whole thing away as history.

Arkhipov said no, so the firestorms never ravaged the world—cooking people alive in streets while others suffocated in the bomb shelters below that they thought would keep them safe.

No one had to watch their loved ones stumble through burning ruins, their skin sloughing off from radiation burns, their lungs scorched by poisoned air.

So the mind does what it always does.

It pushes the danger away—makes it abstract, exceptional, somehow less real—because accepting it threatens one of our deepest assumptions:

that the world is basically safe, comprehensible, and under control.

It is easier not to let that become emotionally real.

Easier not to ask whether the same greed, rivalry, corruption, and hunger for control that nearly ended civilization once are now being armed with technologies powerful enough to finish the job.

Because things have not gotten LESS dangerous.

We have become vastly more powerful.

But that power is evolving—becoming quieter, more sophisticated, and far more subtle in the ways it can be used.

Nuclear fire was at least honest in its violence.

Mushroom clouds. Heat. Ash.

It scorched flesh, but it was clumsy.

The dangers emerging now can dissolve the soul.

Everyone understood what a bomb was. The danger announced itself so loudly that civilization spent generations trying not to use it.

The technologies coming now are far more versatile and insidious.

They don’t have to be harmless.

They only have to look useful enough to deploy.

And by the time the consequences become undeniable—

the system may already be built, normalized, and too deeply embedded to stop.

The most dangerous threat may be the one you don’t recognize as a threat until it has already changed what you are willing—or able—to resist.

WHAT CAPTURED ABUNDANCE ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE

In China today, the punishment arrives without sirens or flame. A journalist posts one thread questioning power — perhaps about a lockdown, a vanished activist, or the cost of silence itself. Within days, the algorithm marks him. His digital ID turns toxic.

Doors close quietly: no more high-speed trains, no loans, no decent job. His children’s names appear on school blacklists; teachers look away, classmates whisper, and the family is slowly erased from normal life. Not imprisoned in a cell, but exiled inside their own country — breathing, walking, yet cut off from society, education, and any future worth dreaming. The fear spreads like invisible fallout. Neighbors stop talking. Friends unfollow. Colleagues avert their eyes. One voice silenced, and millions learn the lesson: better to stay quiet, better to let the soul shrink than risk the slow dissolution of everything you love.

And if this sounds like we're moving from something horrifying to something merely oppressive—

We aren't.

That’s the problem with subtlety. It’s more complicated than things simply blowing up.

Inside the same architecture of power I'm about to describe, human beings have been placed in mass detention, forced into labor, disappeared into prisons, and—according to an independent tribunal—killed for their organs.

This is not a step down in danger; it is a step toward the more likely threat—the one our current trajectory is already building toward: a pattern that begins quietly, on an otherwise normal day, and has already killed far more people than nuclear weapons ever have.

China provides the clearest current warning.

The Great Leap Forward did not begin with famine or cannibalism.

It began with a promise:

Rapid transformation.
Industrial power.
Collective prosperity.
A spectacular leap into the future.

It was a promise of abundance—and a rising floor for everyone.

Then the system stripped ordinary people of meaningful control over their land, labor, food, and even their ability to tell the truth.

Officials were rewarded for reporting success and punished for challenging the narrative. Resources continued flowing upward while the country entered a famine so severe that tens of millions died and cannibalism returned, including documented cases of people killing and eating children.

China later became an economic and technological superpower—but it did so inside the same ruling structure.

Today it possesses:

That power coexists with:

Industrial-scale forced organ harvesting from prisoners of conscience.

Human beings imprisoned, medically screened, matched to recipients, killed, cut open, and sold for parts.

An independent tribunal concluded that a “very substantial number” had been killed this way.

But that still doesn’t tell you what was really going on, because when people started asking questions—bad things started happening.

2001 — Yao Xiaohong. Helped expose organs being taken from an executed prisoner; questioned, then fired.

For years, China denied that prisoners were supplying its transplant industry.

2005 — China admitted they were.

2006 — “Jin Zhong.” Alleged that prisoners of conscience were being killed specifically for their organs; he was arrested twice, tortured, threatened, and fled China after his family received death threats.

Then came Gao Zhisheng. (2004–2017)

One of China’s most prominent human-rights lawyers, Gao condemned the organ-harvesting allegations and did something much more dangerous:

he invited outside investigators into China to find out for themselves.

Soon after, he was detained.

Over the years that followed, Gao was imprisoned, tortured, and repeatedly disappeared.

In 2017, he disappeared again and was never returned.

China later announced that the prisoner-organ era had ended in 2015.

In 2019, an independent tribunal concluded that forced organ harvesting was still continuing.

LOCK-IN

A system becomes locked in when it is no longer enough to recognize that something is wrong.

The harmful behavior has become profitable, protected, institutionalized, and self-reinforcing—while the people capable of challenging it face costs high enough to make meaningful correction unlikely or impossible.

The evidence can be clear.
The damage can be obvious.
People can even want it to stop.

But there is no longer a reasonable path from recognition to correction.

That is lock-in.

So how many people were killed?

Investigators reconstructing China’s transplant industry estimated 60,000–100,000 transplant operations a year [from all sources] during its explosive expansion.

Over decades, the implications are staggering.

100,000 victims?
200,000?
500,000? More?

Nobody can honestly tell you.

That’s the problem when the system doing the killing also controls the prisons, hospitals, transplant records, statistics, courts, press, and access to the evidence.

That is the story.

And people who push too hard against that opacity have been: disappeared, secretly tried, imprisoned for years, beaten, tortured, shackled for months, held in solitary, sleep-deprived, forced into hard labor, blacklisted, censored, fired, financially ruined, re-arrested, denied medical treatment, and left seriously ill, broke, or broken.

Their families have been threatened.

Spouses and siblings detained.
Children targeted.
Elderly parents harassed.

Even the lawyers representing them have been obstructed or disbarred.

These are only some of the journalists and citizen reporters who suffered horribly to bring us fragments of what was happening:

Zhang Zhan, Qi Chonghuai, Wang Jing, Huang Qi, Sophia Huang Xueqin, Gao Yu, Shi Tao, Chen Jieren, Yao Xiaohong, Liu Hu.

That is what sufficient capture does.

It does not merely control what happens.

It controls how much anyone else can know about it.

And much like the rest of the world, the warning signs were there.

Reporters were asking questions.
Lawyers were asking questions.
People were disappearing.

But the unimaginable remained unbelievable.

And by the time enough fragments escaped for the outside world to understand what it might be looking at—it was too late to stop.

That is captured abundance:

Godlike technological capacity built on top of mass death, forced labor, biological exploitation, and pervasive control.

The abundance is real.

The people are still trapped.

Welcome to the Great Leap Forward:

…and political dissidents literally being hunted down and murdered for their organs.

This is what the dissolution of the soul looks like. It’s very quiet, and happens one small compromise at a time, until one day you wake up to something like this.

Now artificial intelligence, surveillance, identity systems, financial infrastructure, behavioral prediction, and automated enforcement are converging into something far more powerful: an architecture capable of detecting and disabling meaningful correction before it can form.

The cage did not disappear. It became intelligent.

This is not an East-versus-West argument.

The danger is any system—state, corporate, ideological, or technological—that gains extraordinary power while losing truthful feedback, meaningful exit, accountability, and respect for human agency.

The branding may differ.

The functional question remains the same:

Does technology expand ordinary human agency faster than it expands institutional power to observe, predict, manipulate, exclude, condition access, and control?

And this is just the beginning. The same quiet infrastructure — digital IDs, social scoring, algorithmic exile — is already taking shape in most countries. Things have been, and remain, much worse than most people realize.

When reality exceeds belief…

This is what “BAD” looks like at a civilizational scale.

The unimaginable remains unbelievable until it becomes unavoidable.

And that may be one of civilization’s oldest tragedies:

We don’t recognize the danger until after the window to stop it has begun to close.

And that is why this matters now.

The technologies are new.

The pattern is not.

Historically, the pattern still ran into hard limits of scale, visibility, prediction, coordination, and enforcement.

Those limitations are disappearing.

But something else is changing too.

For the first time, the forces that sustained this pattern for thousands of years may be losing their underlying logic.

1. Exploited human labor may no longer be necessary for extraordinary wealth.

For most of history, controlling human beings had a brutal economic logic.

Slavery produced wealth.

Serfdom produced wealth.

Conquest produced workers, taxes, land, and resources.

Automation, robotics, computation, abundant energy, and artificial intelligence are beginning to break that equation.

For perhaps the first time in history, civilization may become capable of producing extraordinary abundance without requiring a permanently exploited human class beneath it.

2. High-level sensemaking may no longer need to remain concentrated at the top.

For most of history, information, education, expertise, and the ability to perform high-level analysis were scarce.

The ability to gather enormous amounts of information, compare competing claims, model complex systems, and interrogate the accumulated knowledge of civilization belonged to a tiny minority.

That is changing.

AI and networked knowledge can place capabilities once reserved for governments, intelligence agencies, universities, corporations, and wealthy elites into the hands of ordinary people.

The same technology can obviously be used to manipulate perception.

But for the first time, it can also make high-level independent sensemaking radically more available.

The monopoly on interpretation can break.

The Problem Of Convergence.

The disturbing part is that you do not have to accept my full thesis to see the emergency.

Across researchers, industry insiders, international assessments, independent safety reviews, and repeated adversarial analysis of my own work, the same structural warning keeps reappearing:

Ray Dalio’s Warning

One of the most respected researchers of these historical patterns is Ray Dalio, founder of Bridgewater Associates — the world’s largest hedge fund.

Dalio has spent decades studying the rise and fall of major empires across the last 500 years. He correctly anticipated the 2008 financial crisis and advises presidents, central banks, and policymakers globally.

4.5 -> 5 and getting worse. 6 being a horror show.

Artificial Intelligence:

700+ experts: extinction-level AI risk deserves treatment comparable to NUCLEAR WAR.

International AI Safety Report: safety techniques remain insufficient; waiting for conclusive evidence creates its own danger.

Frontier-lab insiders: companies possess information the public doesn't and have incentives that can conflict with effective oversight.

2026 industry review: existential safety remains appallingly weak while the capabilities race accelerates.

Daniel Kokotajlo - In 2021, before ChatGPT existed, Kokotajlo published a detailed forecast of AI through 2026 that went on to anticipate the chatbot explosion, inference-time reasoning, agent-like architectures, enormous training expenditures, and the U.S.–China chip struggle.

He also coauthored the 2023 paper “Model Evaluation for Extreme Risks”

A 2026 retrospective called his forecast “frighteningly accurate.”

Daniel joined OpenAI in 2022 as a governance researcher focused on forecasting/scenario planning—specifically studying how quickly AI capabilities might advance and the economic, political, and safety consequences.

Then in 2024 he quit OpenAI and refused to sign a non-disparagement agreement even though he believed doing so would cost him approximately $2 million in vested equity.

TIME subsequently named him to the TIME100 AI list in both 2024 and 2025.

He said:

70% chance this goes horribly wrong—for example, AI takeover or another very large catastrophe that could include human extinction.”

He also said that even a 10% estimate would be high enough to justify delaying development for years if that delay materially reduced the risk.

…but we’re well past that…

BUT TO BE CLEAR - THIS IS NOT AN AI SAFETY ARGUMENT

AI is one accelerant inside a much larger problem.

The problem is us.

Humanity developed civilization-threatening weapons long before modern AI existed. And today we are simultaneously increasing our power across roughly a dozen technological pathways capable of producing catastrophic or irreversible failure.

Remove AI tomorrow and the underlying problem remains.

It just moves slower.

AI matters because it accelerates, connects, automates, and scales many of the other pathways at once.

Surveillance strengthens behavioral control.
AI strengthens cyberwarfare and autonomous weapons.
Biotechnology becomes easier to design and automate.
Financial and identity systems make exclusion easier to enforce.
Concentrated power determines who controls the infrastructure.

All while societies fracture, institutions lose trust, and geopolitical tensions rise.

And Engineered Capture attacks the one thing every dangerous system needs in order to remain survivable:

truthful feedback and correction.

So we are not facing twelve independent exponential risks.

We are connecting exponential risks to other exponential risks—inside institutions that can themselves become increasingly powerful, opaque, and resistant to correction.

That is a fundamentally different problem.

The risks compound. The safeguards erode. The clock accelerates.

At that point, arguing about which individual catastrophe is ‘most likely’ misses the point.

We have built a civilization in which multiple catastrophic capabilities are accelerating together while the systems responsible for coordinating, governing, and correcting them are themselves under increasing strain.

You don't need certainty about which failure gets there first.

You need enough confidence that the architecture is dangerous to start building the counterforce now.

I think Meta Crisis researcher Daniel Schmachtenberger said it best:

“Rivalrous game dynamics, multiplied by exponential technology, are self-terminating.”

“Exponential tech is inexorable. We cannot put it away. So we either figure out anti-rivalry at scale, or the human experiment comes to completion.”

At what point does skepticism stop being a reason to dismiss the problem—and become a reason to test it?

You do not need to believe every forecast above.

You do not need to agree with Dalio, Kokotajlo, Schmachtenberger, or me.

But once enough independent warning signs begin pointing toward the same structural failure, the rational response is no longer dismissal. It is adversarial review.

So I tried to break the larger argument.

I loaded the full evidence package of my full report into three frontier AI systems and instructed them to attack the argument—not endorse it.

They challenged individual claims, pushed back on language, questioned causal interpretations, and disagreed about probabilities and timelines.

But the central architecture kept surviving.

Exponential technology does not remove that pattern. It increases its leverage.

One deep-research assessment placed:

The probability that the core Third Pillar pattern is real and often dominant in high-stakes systems at 85–95%.

The probability that it explains the gap between rising productivity and broad human flourishing better than drift and incentives alone at 75–95%.

The probability that, without a serious counterforce, most of humanity enters a multipolar surveillance-and-automated-control environment within roughly two decades at 60–80%.

These estimates are not proof.

But they are the result of loading the evidence into systems designed to analyze large bodies of information, asking them to find the strongest objections, and instead, having them seeing the same conclusion survive repeatedly.

Phase 1: Ubiquitous Normalization (2026–2030)

Assuming current development vectors proceed without a massive structural counterforce, the probability of entering a high-friction, automated lock-in state sits between 70% and 85% by 2035–2040.”

The models disagreed about exactly how much time remains.

They did not disagree about the direction, the severity, or the need for a serious counterforce.

But AI is not the underlying problem.

It is where the underlying problem becomes easiest to see.

The force driving this is older than computers:
Human competition, concentrated power, distorted incentives, greed, status, fear, institutional self-protection, and the deliberate exploitation of those weaknesses by people willing to use them.

AI did not create that machinery. It gave it leverage.

Systemic Drift creates the vulnerable terrain.
Human Nature supplies the predictable weaknesses.

Engineered Capture learns how to exploit both.

And exponential technology increasingly determines how much power the resulting system has when it does.

AI is not the monster in this story.

It is leverage in the hands of whatever human systems win control of it.

This is why Engineered Capture matters.

It does not have to invent every catastrophe.

It only has to corrupt the systems that would have prevented one.

When money rewards speed, power rewards control, institutions punish inconvenient feedback, and increasingly capable technologies amplify whoever wins the race, the danger compounds.

The technology gets stronger at the same time the correction mechanisms get weaker.

That is the shared failure mechanism.
